Unity Of The Church In The Bible BF Blog

Unity Of The Church In The Bible

There are many verses about the unity of the Church in the Bible. From the Old Testament to the New Testament God was all about unity. The unity of the spirit is a bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3 ESV). God was in unity and peace with The Word and the Holy Spirit.  God also wanted unity with man and between man within the body of Christ Jesus. This is spoken about in the New Testament for Christ’s followers. Therefore, unity is the bond of peace between God and the church.

The Church’s foundation is based on the unity of believers. Working as one body from different backgrounds to share the joy of The Lord. The early church worked as one body and showed us examples of unity for us to follow. To help us understand what a Christian community should look like. To teach us how we are part of God’s plan. Let’s review Bible verses that tell the stories of Unity with God and his new creation.

Holy Spirit And Unity

Unity of the Spirit began with God. His Spirit included Jesus and the Holy Spirit forming the Trinity of God. With this unity, God is able to work through all Christians. Jesus told us that He was sending the same spirit that united Him and God for our benefit.  The Holy Spirit lives within us when we decide to become God’s people a new creation in Christ. Hence, we are united in spirit to worship God in spirit. We are no longer our own as our body becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit that lives in all Christians is the same spirit that transforms our body into a holy temple. We must use this body for a greater cause. That cause is to share the love of Christ. The Holy Spirit will teach you and remind you of all the things Jesus taught while He was with us. While you read your Bibles allow the Holy Spirit to teach you so when the time comes you will remember how to share the Gospel.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26 ESV

And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38 ESV

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV

Body of Christ And Unity

As the body of Christ, all Christians should work together for the good of the church. Each person has gifts and talents to be used to grow their local church. Nothing should be done out of selfish ambition. The Apostle Paul told the Corinthians that they are the body of Christ and individual members working together in unity. A unity of faith based on the truth of the Gospel. Most churches require their members to participate in the running of the church.  There is plenty to do in the work of ministry such as greeters, childcare, worship teams, etc. Hence, the leaders and teachers within the church are able to equip you with any work you choose.

My church has gone so far as to administer a Spiritual Gifts Test to aid in learning about our gifts and talents. Mine are knowledge, teaching, and evangelism. I have made every effort to share my gift with others. I pray that I share in a manner worthy of the calling.  Thereby, fostering unity among Christians with my knowledge of the Son of God to bear fruit for God. For it is God that we all now belong.

Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 1 Corinthians 12:27 ESV

“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,” Ephesians 4:11-12 ESV

Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. Romans 7:4 ESV

Christian Unity

When Christians come together to help their communities it is immeasurably good.  However, Christians are also called to help each other. The Christian unity requires us to do life together. Christians who bear each other’s burdens can share how they have overcome in a particular circumstance. Therefore, be reminded that some of our hardships are to glorify God. You have no idea how much of a blessing you can be to someone dealing with a circumstance that you have overcome with the help of the Spirit of God.

On the other hand, a lack of unity is displayed when the interests of others and their situation have no effect on us. We have no empathy or compassion for their troubles. Hence, we lack the fruit of the spirit of love, goodness, kindness, and other attributes. We have no desire to treat people in trouble like family members that need our care.

However, we are called to live in the spirit step by step. This includes tithes and offerings to support the church. Donating food for the local pantries and shelters. Volunteering to help with chores or errands for the elderly and sick. It could also include cooking meals for the sick or a new mom. This should be what Christian unity looks like in the church today. We are kept in perfect harmony when we care for others.

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 ESV

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalm 55:22 ESV

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Galatians 5:22 ESV

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:25 ESV

Christian Life

The Christian Life is not always easy, but it is joyful. It requires us to have unity of mind grounded in the Kingdom of God. To see and live above the things of the world.  To keep our eyes focused on God as was taught to the Jewish people and then to the Gentiles. Our triune God is a God of endurance. His Love is forever as is written in the Word of God. As Christians, this love from the Father should be shared with others.

There are many stories of unity in the Bible where people came together to share what they had. During these times people put others before themselves selling and donating items for the good of all Christians. That is the unity of Christian life.

After the day of Pentecost when the Apostle Peter preached about the good news, many were baptized. Therefore, they devoted themselves to the apostle’s teachings.  They broke bread, prayed, and fellowshipped together. The people came together to sell possessions and belongings and distribute them to those in need. This is brotherly love. A love where you do not wish anyone to be in need.

The Apostle Peter speaks of a sincere brotherly love, where Christians love one another earnestly from a pure heart. This brotherly love is a result of being obedient to the truth. Hence, this type of love should mirror the love of Jesus.

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 ESV

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 1 Peter 1:22 ESV

And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. Acts 2:45 ESV

Unity of the Faith

Unity of the faith requires that all are on the same page with God. There is one God made up of three persons – The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. We all should believe that Jesus came from heaven and is fully man and fully God. Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice for atonement for our sins. He is our high priest and has forgiven our sins. Therefore, we as Christians must all believe that Jesus died, and was resurrected. The Holy Spirit sent by the Father at the request of Jesus dwells inside of us when we first believe.

United in our faith we believe this all to be true. This kind of unity requires that we have faith in everything that God has written in the word. We must have faith that God is sovereign over all and that His plan is good. This plan will bring great joy and peace to all believers because by living by faith, we please God. Therefore, we can expect a good reward for our belief that He exists, He loves us, He is faithful and He will never forsake us.

Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17 ESV

because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 ESV

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6 ESV

Christ Jesus, Unity, And The Church

Jesus wanted His followers to be more than just church members.  He wants us to Be the church working together as one body. Thereby creating a perfect bond of unity in the church. Everyone should be working for the good of the church and not their own interests. The church should be Like the body. The body is made up of many members all working within the body as one. Therefore, true unity comes from a biblical unity of hearing the word of The Lord and doing the good works set before us. This is true unity working together for our Holy Father to share the good news in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Like each member of the body, each member of the church should work together to use their gifts and talents to serve the church. We cannot come to church taking what we hear and learn from others. We must also participate. Each person should be listening for opportunities to be part of any ministries that need volunteers. Step out of your comfort zone and pitch in. We are God’s fellow workers; He has work for us to do. Do not shut your ears and eyes to the needs of the church and others. Like Jesus, we are called to work for the glory of God. Be part of the church’s unity.

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 ESV

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 ESV

For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building. 1 Corinthians 3:9 ESV

Unity in God’s Plan

When we decide to place our faith in God, we join His plan for eternal life. We become part of God’s plan for the world. Everything we do according to His plan brings God honor and glory. We are united with Him in saving mankind. Every time we share the Gospel with a non-believer or help a believer to understand God’s great love. We are part of God’s plan. We are united with Him against the dark forces of Satan. These are the important things that we should remember. This is the great commission from Jesus. Therefore, read and learn all that you can about the good news. Jesus died for all sins. Sins from yesterday, today, and those to come. For we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God.

However, if we unite ourselves with God, align our principles with God’s word, and believe in Jesus then our sins are forgiven. Just confess, repent, and sin no more. Seems simple enough but we will need to repeat this process many times in our lives. Unfortunately, the heart is deceitful and will lead us to stray from the Lord. However, our hope is in Jesus. He is our Savior. The Savior of the world told us that if we believed we would see the glory of the Lord.

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Mark 16:15 ESV

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23 ESV

Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” John 11:40 ESV

There are steps to follow in order to foster unity in the church body. It starts with a humble mind. Humility means to count others more than oneself. This is where you will experience the fruit of the spirit. This is the time when you will experience the great joy of the Lord. There is no feeling like the feeling you have when you have done something wonderful for someone else. The feeling you get when you accomplish a goal for your church that will lead one more to Jesus.

These are the important steps that form the power of unity of the church in the Bible.

  1. Join a church.
  2. Read your Bible.
  3. Attend Bible Study.
  4. Share the Gospel.
  5. Volunteer to work in your church.
