Bible Verses About Discouragement

Discouragement is the playground of the devil. It is his desire to discourage us so much that we abandon the plan God has for us. Discouragement can cause us to fall away from every good thing in our lives. We oftentimes lose the will to simply keep trying. The beginning of discouragement finds its origin in many emotions. When we feel fatigued, frustrated, fearful, fail, or very overwhelmed by our day-to-day routine. There are many Bible verses about Discouragement to help us work through this feeling.

Some verses will identify the cause of your discouragement. Others will provide guidance and solutions to combat feelings of discouragement. Christ Jesus told us there would be trouble, but we should have courage in his ability to save the world. We should have confidence in His sovereignty and feel better and hopeful about this promise.  Remember God’s word is faithful, and we can trust it.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV

Fatigue Leads To Discouragement

No matter who you are we all need rest. When we find ourselves run down and fatigue begins to set in, we can become discouraged. The solution to this is rest. Rest will allow us time to heal our souls. To refresh our minds. Feelings of fatigue can make us feel that we cannot accomplish even the simplest tasks. We are so run down that doing one more thing leads us to feel downtrodden and discouraged. Hence, when we attempt to move forward without a period or season of rest it can paralyze us. This leads us to accomplish less than we hoped and sink deeper into discouragement. However, this is the time we should allow the power of Christ our Savior to provide rest.

Rest may be more than a nap or a good night’s sleep. You may need a rest from the situation or issue. There may be a time for you to talk it out with someone to gain a clearer perspective of your situation. Most times you can find rest in seeking God. Subsequently, spending time in His word will allow the Holy Spirit time to fill you with joy. Allow the power of the Holy Spirit to speak to you and provide guidance and aid with prayers to the Lord.

Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. Psalm 116:7 NIV

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. Romans 8:26 NIV

Frustration and Discouragement

Sometimes frustration can build up in us when we find ourselves waiting for something or someone. Frustration can also come from circumstances not working in our favor. We can become frustrated if we feel that we are not being understood. We can be frustrated by our lack of control of our world. Frustration can be attributed to being in a season longer than we desire.  Especially, if that season is filled with pain, illness, or a downturn in our financial situation or a loss of friends or family members. We cannot see a way out that will benefit us or them and God’s promises of joy seem to have passed us by.

We understand that in due time this will all pass but it is getting through this season that fills us with frustration especially if it is caused by a mistake on our part. Consequentially, we will focus on mistakes until we are filled with discouragement.

We have lost the perfect peace that comes from being in God’s presence.  Instead, we are stuck in the presence of the devil. Thereby, listening to his lies and distortion. This only tends to rob us of joy and leave us frustrated and discouraged. However, God the Father wishes to bring you joy for he is the God of all comfort.

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44 NIV

Fear Brings Discouragement

Fear is a very strong emotion that brings discouragement. It will evoke the fight or flight syndrome.  We will either fight this fear with the help of our Heavenly Father and the power of the Holy Spirit or we will run and hide.

However, if we choose to fight the mighty hand of God will help us fight our fear.  Whether we fear an illness, a job loss, loss of a loved one the peace of God will be with us every step of the way. Seeking God daily can help us move forward from our fear and gain strength knowing that God is with us. He wants us to be strengthened by His love and to soar like an Eagle. The power of God does not allow us to grow weary and become discouraged.

Overwhelmed And Discouraged

Sometimes in our lives, we become overwhelmed by the number of things we have to accomplish in a set period of time. It does not matter if you are in the process of doing good for a good cause or just an everyday task. Sometimes, the work tasks, the home tasks, and the good works collide all at once and it can be just too much, especially around holiday time when the season is full of good cheer and festivities with much to do and see. There are things to buy, to bake, to wrap, to trim.  There are people to visit and visitors to receive. You have to get the house ready for the season, as well as work stuff and everyday home stuff.  At times it will feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day.

Oftentimes, it is just dealing with everyday life that can be overwhelming. It is relationships in your life that can be difficult or complicated. You may have unrealistic expectations at work or at home. It could be having to deal with a health issue for yourself or others. Finally, it could be the expectations that you have for your life. You may feel overwhelmed by reconciling who you want to be and who you actually are. Consequently, this can lead to feeling discouraged and being a failure.

This is the lies from the devil, and we should seek our encouragement from Jesus. His yoke is easy, and his burden is light. When we become overwhelmed and weary, we should seek Jesus.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29 NIV

Failure Is Discouraging

We cannot always succeed in everything that we do, especially if we are doing it alone. Our own willpower is not enough to see us through. Yes, there are times when we feel that we are enough on our own. However, our weakness is where God works miracles. As believers, the power of God is working in us and through us all the time.

On the other hand, there are times when we do fail and become discouraged. I have learned that sometimes what we desire is not in God’s plan for us. When God closes a door, it may seem like we failed but, in most cases, God is saving us from something or for something far better.  It may exceed our wildest dreams. The power of God has no bounds. Above all, He can do far more than even we can imagine.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, Ephesians 3:20 NIV

Elijah Was Discouraged

The prophet Elijah is one of the biblical examples of discouragement. The prophet Elijah experienced failure and fear as he attempted to get God’s people to return to God’s truth. Elijah was so discouraged that he prayed for God to take his life. Elijah had had enough of dealing with failure, disappointment, and fear for his life.  After he prayed, he lay down and fell asleep.

God allowed Elijah to rest and sent an angel to minister to Elijah because God knew that this journey was too much for him. Hence, the Lord provides the nourishment to strengthen Elijah. 1 Kings 19:1-8

Christians today can rely on this same provision. God will go with us on all our journeys no matter how discouraged we may become. Therefore, even if we experience fatigue, frustration, fear, failure, or are overwhelmed, the good news is God is with us. God will fulfill our needs to accomplish everything for His glory in Christ Jesus.

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 NIV

Christ Jesus The Work

The work of the lord has been done. God sent Jesus to Shepard His people into the Kingdom of God. We as followers need only to believe in the word of God. This is where we will find our good courage. Our faith will lead us to the right thing that will lead us to joy. Let’s not lean on our own understanding. For our focus should not be here on earth but on the God of hope. Our Lord and Savior Jesus was sent down from heaven to die for our sins and conquer death. He ascended into heaven before a cloud of witnesses. Christ Jesus is now seated at the righteous right hand of God. That same righteous right hand is extended to us through Jesus. The work has been done.  It is finished so there is no fear of condemnation. This is where we find our rest.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; Proverbs 3:5 NIV
